Picture of me smiling. Welcome!

Hello! My name is Lucas Kabela

It seems you've stumbled across my personal website. Welcome!

Allow me to tell you a bit about myself (or just use the navbar to skip to the good stuff.)

I am a Masters student at the University of Texas at Austin. I have a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics, and will be obtaining a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science in Computer Science in May 2021. My fields of interest are Artificial Intelligence and Theory, with special interest in Program Synthesis and Natural Language Processing

I really enjoy empowering others, whether that be through peer mentoring, teaching, or just giving advice (when solicited). I've also done some pretty cool things outside of the classroom! Keep scrolling to check them out.

My Career

Software Engineering Intern
May 2020 - August 2020

I spent this summer as a research engineering intern contribute to the open source game LIGHT, which is a text-based fantasy adventure game grounded providing data for grounded dialog settings in natural language processing.

As a research engineering intern under the software engineering discipline, I combined four servers to one server in Python using Tornado and added frontend components in ReactJS which enabled users to save, load and manage custom worlds built in SQLite which I also implemented.

Software Engineering Intern
May 2019 - August 2019

This summer I worked on a tool to automate neural network quantization in Pytorch. This tool worked by using a variety of strategies such as greedy, heuristic, or exhaustive search to search over the space of quantized models and produce a set of models to the user, each with their runtime and top-1 accuracy.

Using this tool on VGG-16, I was able to reduce the size of the model by roughly 3.7 times and reduce the runtime for inference by roughly 2 times at a less than 1% loss in accuracy.

Software Engineering Intern
May 2018 - August 2018

As a backend software engineer intern, I contributed to a microservice architecture for a Telematics Service Platform (or TSP)

I executed a major consolidation of 5 microservices into one, which required creating maven dependency files, a new suite of unit and integration test through junit, and a docker file and deployment pipeline. Additionally, part of this task was creating new controllers and endpoints for the api.

Working with Go, I also added functionality to a device simulator, such as simulating important vehicle events like collisions or customer request for assistance. To further test our services and take advantage of this lightweight simulator, I wrote a script to execute hundreds of instances of the simulator in parallel. This enabled load testing for our servers and saved countless hours and resources - instead of getting a device and hooking it up to a testing bench one at a time, my work enabled developers to test their work through the press of a keyboard command.

CS314 Undergraduate Proctor
August 2017 - May 2019

As an undergraduate proctor for my schools data structures course, which is taught in Java, I engaged with 20 students every week in an hourly discussion section that I lead In these sections, I proctored quizzes and engaged students in discussing the proper answer to coding problems.

Additionally, I held 3 hours of office hours every week where I aided students in difficult projects or conceptual questions. This was by far my favorite part of being a teaching assistant! I was able to help explain concepts, provide debugging tips, and effectively review code.

My other responsibilities included monitoring an online question forum to further engage students and grading and proctoring projects, quizzes, and test for correctness and programming style
